Fixing your car

Cause of flat battery

A flat battery can be caused by cold weather, frequent short journeys, leaving lights on for a long period of time or other devices plugged in when the engine if not running. It can also be the result of a car parked for an extended period of time during holidays or at the airport carpark. If you have a flat battery, your car will not start after a break. If you stop mid-journey it is not your battery’s fault.

What to do

If your battery is not fully discharged, you might be able to charge a battery using a car battery charger that plugs into the mains. If it’s fully discharged, the only option is to jumpstart and run an engine for around 30 minutes to recharge. You will need a set of jump leads and a ‘donor’ car to do this. If it doesn’t help, it might be a more serious problem with the car.

Battery replacement

After your battery has been drained, its life has been significantly compromised. You might consider a new battery in a near future to prevent any more battery drain. Popular motoring shops stock a large selection of car batteries and provide a fitting and recycle service. Just remember that getting rid of your old car battery is not straightforward so seek professional advice.
