Motorway recovery

Emergency

When you travel on the motorway or a busy main road, a breakdown assistance might not be possible. Even changing a wheel might not be possible if it is on the road side. In most cases a recovery will be needed. Try to pull over to the hard shoulder and call a recovery operator. If your car stopped mid-journey and are in the live lane, you will need to call the police to close the road to allow a safe recovery of your car.

Road works

If you break down on the motorway during the roadworks, there will most likely be a free recovery service available. In this case, all you need to do is put on your hazard lights and wait for a recovery truck to come to your rescue. They will take you to safety outside the roadworks to allow you to get an additional assistance or recovery. They will not tow you to home or a garage.

No hard shoulder

If you break down on the motorway and the hard shoulder has been converted to the traffic (“live”) lane, use the nearest emergency refuge area (ERA), motorway service area or try to leave at the next junction. If this is impossible, try to get your vehicle off the carriageway. Stay in the car, put your seatbelt on, hazard lights and call emergency services.
